Laser Vision Correction (SMILE/LASIK/PRK)
SMILE/LASIK/PRK are common laser vision procedures for anyone with nearsightedness, farsightedness and or astigmatism. Using the latest laser technique, Dr. Zhou can change the shape of your cornea (clear part of your eye) to improve your vision and quality of life.
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticle Extraction) is a minimally invasive procedure and the most advanced refractive surgery to treat mild to severe nearsightedness and astigmatism.
What makes SMILE different from LASIK?
During LASIK, a small flap is made on the surface of the eye, and is lifted up prior to the laser reshaping the cornea. This flap is then placed back to heal. With SMILE, no flap is made, a laser is used to create a precise disc shape within the cornea and a small incision opening. Next, this disc shaped tissue is removed from the micro-incision. The cornea then settles into the shape needed to accurately focus light onto the retina.
After the procedure, you will have clearer vision without the need for your contact lenses or eye glasses. In recent studies, laser vision correct is successful in achieving 20/20 vision in 90% of patients.
A consultation with Dr. Zhou involves a complete eye exam to rule out any existing ocular diseases such as severe dry eyes, retina problems or glaucoma. The doctor will ask you not to wear contact lenses for one week prior to your consultation so your cornea can return to its original shape. Chronic contact lens wear can change the shape of your cornea.
How Long Does the Procedure Take?
The actual procedure takes less than 30 minutes. Your doctor will instill anesthetic eye drops before the procedure to ensure comfort during the surgery. Most patients can go back to work the next day.
Am I a Good Candidate for SMILE/LASIK?
Certain factors will determine whether a patient is eligible for laser vision correction. These factors include: good eye health, cornea thickness, corrective prescription, age, and stable vision.
It is best to schedule a LASIK consultation to determine if you are a good candidate. A consultation includes a complete eye exam including cornea topography (picture that maps the surface of the clear part of the eye) and dilation to verify your prescription. On the day of your consultation, the office will check your existing glasses and contact lens prescription with today’s prescription. A topography (elevation map) and thickness of your cornea is taken to ensure you are a good candidate. These tests are essential to ensuring your cornea is the right shape for laser vision correction so you can achieve the best visual outcome.
